Roadmap

First the roots. Then what grows.

The app comes first: make the everyday BOAR excellent, and let the people who carry it tell us where it falls short. Then it grows outward, into packs of knowledge that people make, share and take with them.

A direction, not a schedule. It will change as people use the app.

  1. Phase 1 · Shipped

    Roots

The part that already works, in v1.0.0 for Android. All of it runs on the phone, with no account and no network after the first setup, and it is measured on a real device.

    • Shipped

      Local offline engine

Ask with no signal and BOAR finds the right passages in its library, by keyword and by meaning, then a model on your phone writes the answer.

      How it’s built
    • Shipped

      Your own knowledge base

Bring your own notes, manuals and data (.txt, .md, .csv, .json or .pdf) and BOAR learns them on the phone, in collections you switch on and off.

      How importing works
    • Shipped

      Model browser

Pick another model from the curated list, or search Hugging Face for a GGUF model and download it without leaving the app.

    • Shipped

      Portable collections

Export a collection as a plain JSON pack and hand it to someone; their phone rebuilds it locally, so it works on any device.

  2. Phase 2 · Here today

    First shoots

Making the app itself better: on more phones, for more ways of asking, with the right model for each question, and ready before you leave home.

    • In progress

      iOS

The same offline pipeline on iPhone, so BOAR goes with you whatever phone you carry. It already builds; now we’re getting it running well on real iPhones.

    • Testing

      Packs for places

Before a trip, download a pack for where you’re going, say Rome: places to eat and drink from OpenStreetMap and Wikivoyage, found by distance and diet, each with its source. The first ten regions are in testing; getting around comes next.

    • Testing

The right model for each task

A quick answer straight from the sources when that’s enough, the model you picked for most questions, and a bigger one when you ask to go deeper, all in the same conversation.

    • In progress

      Offline voice

You can already ask out loud: speech recognition runs on the phone and audio never leaves it. Next, a voice that reads the answer back, for when your hands are busy.

  3. Phase 3 · After that

    Branches

Once the app is solid, packs become something people make, share and trust: a community library, verified essentials, and a private memory that stays yours.

    • Later

      A shared pack library

Build a pack from your own notes, export it and hand it on, or browse, preview and download packs and specialised models the community curates, from a directory built to work offline first.

    • Later

      Private memory

Choose to encrypt your personal notes, the private documents you import and your conversation history, so only you can read what’s stored on your phone.

    • First pack testing

      Essentials library

Checked offline bundles for first aid, evacuation, survival, disaster response, homesteading and growing food. The first, Emergency and preparedness, is in testing: 1,754 documents, each with its source and license.

  4. Phase 4 · Further out

    Grove

Where it could grow: more places to build and read your library, and ways to pass knowledge on without the internet at all.

    • Further out

      Desktop app

BOAR on Mac and Windows, for people who build and look after large libraries and then carry them on the phone.

    • Exploring

      Sharing nearby

Pass a pack from one BOAR phone to another over Bluetooth or local Wi-Fi, with no internet in between.

Beyond the phases

Further ideas

  • Idea

    Peer-to-peer inference

Phones nearby share the work of one answer, so a group of BOAR phones can run a bigger model together, with no internet and no server.

  • Idea

    Barter and trade guides

Reference guides and tables for trading face to face when payments and networks are down: what things are worth, how to measure them, how to agree a fair swap.
